Faded Glory is what remains of this very early orphan quilt. Sorry that it's upside down, but rotated, it looked weird to me. Only block that it matters is the school house block in the middle. I made this for my youngest son, beginning in 1986 and finishing up in 1987. It's hand quilted. I would be hard pressed to tell you WHY I hand quilted it, it certainly does not merit hand quilting, even in my opinion. It's a utility quilt, meant to be used and loved hard by a small boy. As always, it's pretty scrappy. I didn't have much of a stash in those early days, but I did have scraps from sewing for my girls. A few pieces I know were actually taken from clothing. I was beginning to get serious about quilting, and I loved the quilting more than the piecing. Most of the squares, or sets of squares are treated as a unit, so many odd little things are quilted in. Words, pigs, whales, teddy bears, scottie dogs, hearts, loops...LOL..and some free form cable. Heaven only knows what possessed me to do all that quilting..LOL. The quilt has a story, but I think I'll wait and give you that tomorrow. Posted by Picasa

Very nice! A lot of love shows thru in this quilt! I especially liked the spider web in the quilting.

It's obvious why you spent so much time quilting this beauty. It's a treasure.

I, too, love the spider web.

Awww, I like quilts with a her-story. Promise you'll post it soon?

It's considered an orphan quilt because it was made with blocks from different other quilts?

and Justin loved it to death, right? Interesting to go back and see what fabrics were in use at the time, isn't it?

Oh Finn, you can tell that that little boy has loved that quilt for all these years. It is just splendid. I love all the colors and the special little hints and pieces that you quilted into it for him.

Wonderful quilt Finn!

Love the ideas for the quilting. Esp. scottie dogs!!

What's the story with the schoolhouse block?

You handpieced it I'll bet because this beautiful quilt was made with 10% fabric, 10% thread and 80% love.

What a pretty little thing, Finn! I love all the little quilting motifs you did - and at least it faded over the years of use, and not because it was sitting there waiting for something to happen to it. The love you quilted into it still shines brightly though!
