Post A Note....

The kids....with Aunt Sr. Marian, then:
And now: Our first 2 adoptions were back in 1967(oldest DD)and 1969(oldest DS). DH was teaching in MI and at that time there were more babies than homes. That began to change in 1970 with better birth control and then with the Roe VS Wade decision. We moved to WI in 1972, and the last 3 children were special needs kids, adopted in 1973,1974 and 1976.

Tagged!

I thought I was running fast enough...but I got tagged *VBS* Dionne, of Sew Many Quilts has tagged me to tell 5 interesting or weird things about myself. This has been a hard assignment. Either I'm not very interesting, or my brain doesn't register that. Weird, well maybe. Here goes: 1. I have 5 adopted children. Each was a seperate adoption, 2 in Michigan, and 3 in Wisconsin. The oldest child we adopted was almost a year and the youngest was 10 weeks. I have 3 boys and 2 girls. They have given me the 13 grandchildren, mostly boys, as you know. 2. I love crayons. I like the smell, color and just everything about them...except when the points wear down. I have alot of crayons in a tin, stubbies. There is always at least one new box of 24 hidden in the china cabinet, for when I need new "points".
3. I like salt on my cottage cheese and sugar on my pancakes. You are welcome to ALL the maple(and other kinds)syrup in the world. 4. I'm not afraid of bats, mice or spiders, but I hate snakes and worms and that doesn't seem weird to me,. 5. I adore scrap quilts, the scrappier the better. Apparently I'm really a very down to earth kind of gal. I'd rather have the pieces than the yardage. I think I'm suppose to tag 5 or so more of you to do this, but it's so hard to choose. Why don't you ALL do it???? Then I won't be alone being weird or not very interesting....LOL

Memorial Day Memories and a Me-Me.....

I know Memorial Day is for honoring and remembering our fallen war heroes...and I do, altho I've not lost anyone in combat. I'm choosing to let my memories linger on my beloved parents and Gram Lottie. That's the thing with photographs...they freeze and hold a love one in time. This picture of my parents and my Mother's mother was taken years before I was born in 1940. I can't help but wonder what dreams they dreamed for the future...aging seems to have given me more cause to wonder about their dreams and what came true and what didn't. When I was a child, we honored Memorial Day in my family. By the time I was old enough to remember, there was a grave with our name on it, my baby brother. And Gram Lottie's husband, my maternal grandfather, who died before I was 2. Back then Memorial Day always came on May 30th. No extended weekend to slip away to the cabin or lake. Just the day...for remembering and for taking flowers to the cemetary. By the 30th of May, WI generally has lilac blooming. Those and lilies of the valley. Our bouquets were generally one, or both, of those flowers. The scent of lilacs colors all of my memories of this Day. I won't be going to the cemetary, which is some 40+ miles away, tomorrow. I was there on Mohter's Day with DD#1. I put a new joint stone on the graves of my parents this spring, she took me to see it. And I visited the fairly new grave of my favorite paternal aunt, Lucille. She is the one who got me started piecing quilts *VBS*. She died in Kansas City, MO back in April of 2007. I was unable to be at the cemetary when she was interred, but have now paid my resepcts to her. There is only one member of my Father's family is still living, and none of my Mother's. It definitely moves one to the outer edge.
I've been tagged by Norma of Random Stitches for a me-me. Since I've never done this one, I will *VBS*, Thanks Norma!
1. What I was doing 10 years ago. 1998~I was living alone with my golden retriever and recovering from my first cornea transplant. Doing pretty much what I am do in 2008, enjoying retirement and making quilts.
2. Five things that are on my "to-do" list today. Put my new red chair on my little patio, water the plants, shower, cut more scraps to sizes and work on my Orange Crush Mystery quilt.
3. Snacks I like. Crackers and hummus, chips and salsa, apple slices and carmel to dip them in, cookies and milk, fresh popcorn.
4.Things I would do if I was a billionaire. Rescue ALL the "golden oldies" at the Golden retriever rescue in MN, fund as many 'no kill' animal shelters as possible, make sure my kids all had homes they owned, provide college money for any and all the grandkids, give my sisters enough to make sure they were secure and comfortable.
5. Place I have lived. Wisconsin, Mississippi, Oregon, Michigan and back to Wisconsin to stay. In WI, I have always lived with 100 miles of where I was born.
Now I'm suppose to tag another 5 or 6 people, so.... I tag YOU, and YOU and YOU and those two hiding over there in the corner *VBS*. Happy Memorial Day weekend everyone!

Crayons, worn down to the nub....

scraps of paper tossed by the wind. Frost on the pumpkin, the haunting call of the geese flying south. More pieces from my scrapbag...and a mind that feels like a hurrican has blown through this week. BUT...Friday night traffic or not, here I am!!A day or two late, several dollars short, but I'm here *VBS*My Finn child, and her brown cotton stockings smiling you back into the 1940's **VBS**(Commercial message inserted here....Ebby's pathetic cries for 'just one more spoonful of the wet stuff Mama'....great pretender that she is, she thinks I don't know she JUST had that one spoonful and will answer her plea) Not gonna happen toots!
Anyway...back to the 40's...just a hop, skip and a jump! Waaaay back last week, or maybe the week before, I was tagged by several of you for the 7 weird things about me me-me...LOL. I could tell you that EVERYTHING about me is weird, but I'd be tellin'...so that won't happen. I've read back through comments but can't find who tagged me.If you are reading this, please tell me it was YOU *VBS* Thanks!
And rather than letting more time pass, I'm just going to lick my pencil and 'do it'.
You remember that pencil licking thing from grade school?? I wonder why we thought we should do that..? Maybe it would write darker or something?? That alone is pretty weird. So here goes, in no particular order....what can I tell you about me that is weird? And that I haven't told you already...LOL 1. I have a birthmark on my right arm, of the strawberry variety. My mom scrapped her right arm, while she was pregnant) from shoulder to elbow on an old trunk lid, and always believed she "marked me". Adults rarely notice it, but children always do and aak if it hurts. It doesn't *S*
2.My blue eyes are not the typical 'round' shape of eyes. They are egg shaped. That alone isn't weird, but mine are also two different sizes. It's the sort of thing you learn when you have cornea transplants.
3. I have to sleep on my stomach...not my side, nor my back. If I can't be on my tummy, I don't sleep...not much fun.(commercial insert: Ebby begging again).
4. This is hard...must be I've already confessed to all my weirdness. Vision problems of one sort or another have plagued me most of my life..and that isn't weird. But the kind of disorder I have is inheired and no one in my family has it but me. Do you suppose the milkman came calling??? THAT would be weird since I resemble my Dad so much...LOL.
5. I sort of like yams(especially raw) but really hate sweet potatoes.
6. I can swallow massive amount of pills without any difficult..freaks my kids out for sure.
7. I'm the one, of three girls in my family, who didn't drink or smoke. Not before and not in college. I've always wondered if maybe that's why I couldn't ever get pregnant? THAT would be pretty weird! But I'm not going back to find out.
7. I've never outgrown my love of crayons. I love, love, love the look of Crayola in the box, all new and shiney and nice sharp points. I love the smell of crayons. I've gotten quite independent about them, just ask my middle sister or my friend Jean. I MUST have pointed crayons. Once the most of the point is worm away I need a new box.
8. A continuation of #7...since I have so very few bad habits, I indulge myself with new crayons whenever I feel the need! I bet I have enough slightly used crayons to supple several school classrooms.
9. I don't like to shop. Period. I put on a happy face and pretend I am enjoying myself when Betsy wants a fabric fix. And I always find something to buy, but there is no real thrill involved for me anymore. I can't seem to feel any need of anything I don't already have. That is weird!
10.I find it weird that nearly all my weirdness isn't really all that weird.
There! Mission acomplished.
I will browse around blogland and see if I can find the rules that are also suppose to be appearing here......AND...as Gypsy Quilter says, this me-me has been floating around the blogs for a while now, so please consider yourself tagged if you want. Thanks God it's Friday, hugs for everyone *VBS*

Guess that truly makes me an October child, right??The countdown to my birthday officially begins at 12:01 !

Michele at A Quilting Journey(see sidebar) tagged me for a 'me-me' of sorts. She has the explaination of what a me-me is on her blog. I settled for thinking it was self explainatory(i.e. the very word "me-me", must be about me *VBG* In this one you describe yourself via the spelling of your name. One word for each letter....LOL
So, are you ready for a double-dose? My Mom DIDN'T name me 'Finn', so I'll have to play fair and use that baptismal name: Sylvia Here goes:
S ~ sweet
Y ~ youthful
L ~ lovable
V ~ valient
I ~ intelligent
A ~ artistic

and also: Finn

F ~ fun
I ~ impish

Home again...

Thursday morning...autumn came with a BANG in WI and MN last evening. Above average temperatures the past few days spawned high winds, tornadoes, 2" hail and an ocean of rain. Many homes torn apart last evening between 6 and 9 p.m. in MN. Flash flood warnings and massive power outages. As of this a.m. the metro area has closed many schools and almost 200,000 are without power. Nothing like Katrina, but much clean up needed.

The storm also brought relief from the 80-90 degree temps. It's a brisk 55 degrees in my little corner of the world today. High in the mid 60's.
I am very happy to be home from the happiest place on earth, and just slightly dizzy from my time at the Mad Hatter's tea party...those tea cups are something else...LOL.

I've been tagged by MaggieAnn to do one of the 5 things me-mes...so here goes....
