Oh, When the Quilts come Marching In.....
mine will be among them...we stood up and challenged ourselves and we did good!! But that deserves a seperate post.
This is my finish #4. It's a Love Ya! strippy made from a jellyroll that my sweet friend Julie Q send me last Valentines Day. Jellyrolls seem to work well with the strippy method.
This is the backing flannel I chose. Betsy and I bought the bolt with a 60% off one "on bolt" item at Mill Ends. It's full price was $4.99 a yd. We got it for less than $2.50. We split the yardage.
And this little doll quilt, a Fence Rail, is my 5th finish. I know, it sure doesn't measure up against the BIG finishes of others, but I'll take it and be happy!!

Tick tock, tick tock...
the seconds slide into minutes, the minutes race toward hours, and in measured time, we move towards 2010. The beginning of the second decade in this amazing 21st century.
As time slips away, so do the minutes until our New Years Eve UFO Countdown ends. It's been fun and quite a wild ride. As you can see, altho I meant to get this Peppermint Delight together in 2009, it didn't happen. That has become a very familiar refrain in my book of lamments. Oh well, there is always next year. I think we've done well, and I'll be reporting the results tomorrow.
This is a picture from Christmas Past. Hard to believe 4 years have slipped by since my youngest son brought his boys to my house that first time. The youngest is now 6 and getting to be very worldly. Big brother has turned 10, and there isn't much he doesn't know. I agree with the song "Old Devil Time"...and thank the powers that be for the ability to 'freeze time' at a particular moment and enjoy it over and over. Such a bunch of "measurers" we humans are. How far? How fast? How much? How soon? How far? We measure almost everything, and keep tally, one way or another. I don't find this to be a bad thing. I've been a Time Keeper, a Keeper of the Keys, the records, the totals, for a long time now, and I will continue to do so, as it's part of who I am.
The Old Man of 2009 had his folly with me today...LOL, and I really need to laugh about it. Not as clever as I thought I was. I did have my #4 finish back before Christmas, but didn't take the picture or blog about it. As of last evening, in talking to Vivian, I didn't think I'd get #5 done. And then I decided to push myself towards that finish. And I did!!! About 8 p.m. tonight, while sitting with friends at the nursing home, listening to live music for New Years Eve. I was so proud. I came home anticipating the picture taking, and the posting of said pictures...hurray for me! Ya, right! I spread out #4 and snap a picture, then decided to flip over the corner and show the fun flannel backing. So I did, that was 2 pictures taken. Well, now just put this tiny doll quilt on the contrast of that backing and snap it's picuture. And at that point, both lights began to blink on my camera....not a good sign. I waited. They blinked. When they stopped, I hoped it would take one more, but for sure the batteries? KA-PUT! I know this. I should have taken them out and recharged them over the days I didn't use them. Sooooo, the camera won't let anything be down loaded until I can close the shutter, and I can't. Please believe me when I say I really DO have finish #4 and #5, and you WILL see them tomorrow, when the batteries are re-charged. In the mean time, this is the quilt I finished up tonight *VBS*
And last but not least, as the year slips toward its conclusion, Ebony and I begin another year together. She's still reclusive, stand-offish and extremely independent. She's not what I had anticipated in a companion animal, but she needs me, and I need her. We accepted each other enough to be co-dependent, and she stays. Happy New Year to everyone from Ebony and Finn

...and I heard him exclaim, as he drove out of sight...
"A Merry Christmas to All..
and to ALL, a Good Night. Didn't hear him say a word about what he did to poor Bessie! I suppose she's grateful for the earmuff *VBS* My wishes for you this holiday season, A happy and healthy holiday and upcoming new year!
By firelight, and a candles soft glow, a change of pace. Less light needed, the friendly clicking of knitting needles. In America today we have no need for knitting our own socks, or those of loved ones. Perhaps that is the very reason behind sooo many younger women picking up the nearly lost needle arts. Whatever the reason, I'm happy to see it happening...does my heart good and feels like we are passing the torch, despite the tech rich age in which we live.
Nearly last, but not least, a fairly new UFO...a Holiday Peppermint treat. I'm hoping to get this one together before the end of the year.
And Last BUT not Least, I just HAVE to share the email I got from Michele of Quilting Journey...LOL. She never ceases to amaze and mystify me. Here's the letter I got today...Add to Finn's New Year's Eve Challenge: My final set of finished projects...
1 more quilt
3 small art quilts for AAQI
3 small quilted projects
I'm not adding in 4 dozen cloth napkins but I made those too ;)
I am now officially done for 2009 and laying down with a good book, an old magazine, or whatever I can find on our tv that still uses an antenna!
signed,
'not only done, but done in'
Michele ;)

Always room for one more...
I'm a firm believer in that. A comment was left by Colleen, formerly of South Africa, yesterday...regarding the Challenge.
Did she still have time to join and try to finish up some UFOs before we roll into 2010??? Of course she can join us *VBS* No limitations here...go for what you think you can accomplish and you may surprise and surpass yourself before it's over!! Welcome aboard Colleen ! And also to Stephanie D. who finalized her challenge amount last week! You can do it...we all can *VBS* Happy stitching! And if you have a moment pop in and see what our challengers are up to. Just last Friday Purple Pam met a goal who wasn't sure she could make...but she did, and I'm just thrilled for her!!

Tuesday's Tally....
yes, the days are getting shorter. That doesn't necessarily change the amount of time we have to sew, quilt and bind...but
it's good to pause for a tally of how we are coming on our New Years Eve UFO Challenge. You gals are doing super well! We began on September 18th, and as of Oct. 20th we have managed to finish 39 of aging UFOs!! I think that is marvelous since each finish is a victory we couldn't quite manage to meet before. There certainly is strength in numbers!! So stitch on brave challengers...stitch on. And if you find a few minutes pop in and see what the gals are up to. I'm nearly the finish on my project #3. I had hoped to have it done last week,but....well, you know how that story goes..*VBS*

Potluck today.....
abit of this and a dash of that *VBS* And as promised, birthday loot!
These are the 8 FQs from DD#1. A really nice assortment. The kittens are just darling. A couple of autumn tone pieces, some dots and spots and even on Christmas fabric. She really loves fabric shopping, and there is a quilt shop in Forest Lake, MN. That's the city in which she works. You did great babe!
And my lovely surprise gift from my friend Julie, of Julie Quilts. I absolutely LOVE the autumn quilt and will enjoy the magazine. Thank you so much Julie, you touch my heart in so many ways *VBS*
My second finish for the UFO Challenge. I've put off binding this little quilt from Prairie Children book. Not sure why, guess I just couldn't make up my mind. It's a small victory, but a "win" none the less. In the UFO Challenge department we are doing very well. We've finished week 2 of the challenge, and 12 projects have been finished. We've had a couple of new gals join us this past week. If you get a chance, pop over and say "hi" to Kathleen and Janet. Or any and all gals on the list...we love your support in reaching our goal. My friend Carol, of Scraps and Pieces of Our Lives, is leading the pack with 6 donations quilts bound and finished and going out the door tomorrow!! Way to go Carol *VBS*!!! Come on Michele...she's set the pace in reaching the goal of 19 finishes!
And last, but not least, welcome to my corner of WI today *VBS* If you've forgotten last winter, Mother Nature is here to remind you. It's a huge storm, reaching back all the way to the Rockies and as far south as Nebraska. Hope you don't get it too Amelia!
They say it should be 2-4 inches before it ends. And we've had the temps in the low 30s and high 20s to go with it! Time to dig out the soup kettle I think.

Crossing the T's and Dotting the I's...
I'm tardy, as usual. Here is some general information about the New Years Eve UFO Challenge.
Anyone can join and play along. The purpose to clear the decks of a few more unfinished projects before we begin 2010! Each quilter(or cross-stitcher) selects how many projects she wishes to finish between now and New Years Eve. Drop me a line or leave me a comment and I'll add you to the list on the sidebar.
There are no prizes(except the obvious satification) and no quilt police will check up on you. When you have a finish and let me know about it, I'll mark it off beside your name. Post about it on your blog, or not, which ever works for you. The project can be any size and in at any stage of complete-ness. They don't have to be specifically quilting projects. It helps alot if we visit each other to cheer each other on to victory. If you have question, pleaase ask and I'll try to answer them. Happy Stitching everyone!!

Looking forward, looking back.
And in the best "gather ye rosebuds while ye may" tradition, I'm thinking about the season and we slide towards autumnal equinox next week. June came and went, and we are approaching the second time of equal night and day.
Altho pesky, squirrels are wise creatures. Nature has built in the need to gather and store things. Which leads me to think about how many quilts I "have or have not" finished this year. The number is quite small.
Disappointed with my slow progress, I have been thinking about last years UFO Challenge. I pledged to finish up 5 UFO by New Years Eve. I made that promise on August 24th. 72 of you joined with me, and we finished up a total of 256 UFOs! I managed to get 15 done, passing my goal of 5! But.....
I still have many that I didn't get around to, plus the new ones I begun this year.
So I'm going to challenge myself(and YOU) to a New Years Eve UFO goal once more. I'm sure with ongoing "One Project A Month" challenge, there won't be as many of us playing along. But I'm going to set it up anyway, even if it's only me *VBS* If you are interested in coming along for the ride, just leave a comment or email me at Finn922000@yahoo.com. Last year we had 4 months and 7 days til New Years Eve. This year we have fewer days, but it still is 3 months and 13 days and that's enough for some progress I think *VBS*
