I went looking for my free form fans from last summer, and found them.
Tonya did a tutorial about hand quilting baptist fans without marking them
. I had to give it a try.
I chose a print that could stand by itself, added a couple of borders and away I went. I think my quilt is about 24" square. I put the weird spiders on the back because I don't like them as much. The quilting shows up pretty well though. I do like making the fans, and it gets easier as you make more and more. I wish I would have thought to just work on it from the back side. Sure would have been easier to see where the arcs were going...LOL

Even though I'm not crazy about holiday specific fabrics, those are kind of cute in a "Halloween-y" way.
I do like the Baptist fans. They give the quilt a very homey look.
That looks great. Your arcs are very nicely spaced. I may wind up trying a little quilt this way. I've been thinking on it, because the thing I miss is quilting, hand or machine - it's my favorite part! I could do little things in my lap. This is an encouraging post for me!
If I actually liked to do handwork, I would have to try this. I may still try when I run out of things to take to guild for the stitch-in
I remember you working on this... it'll soon be time to have it out for the halloween "season" :-)
I still love your free hand arcs! They are wonderful!
Hi Finn *s* Thanks for sharing your Baptist Fans. I recently came across Tonya's tutorial in my surfing around. I really want to give it a try. It was very clever of you to choose a project that is not bed-sized as I was thinking. Maybe I should adopt the same stategy for myself. Finn is a very smart gal *vbg*
Could you share the name of Tonya's blog so that I could see her instruction on hand quilting bapist fans? Thanks a bunch!
It's fun seeing a bit of this project again. We're both feeling the need for halloween I see. Sorry all the tests have been beating you up, but hurrah for new glasses.
Hey Finn, your quilting looks just great! We don't celebrate Halloween here, so I always love to see the fun projects.
I'm so glad you have new glasses, and that your gums are healing. You're definitely on the road to recovery!
*hugs*

Finn that is so funny. Yep, good idea to quilt from the back! You did so well. Look at that beautiful stitching!
gorgeous fans Finn...
Hindsight is always better isn't it. :-) I think sometimes it take us getting through the process in order to spot the easier way we could have done it. No matter what - it's a wonderful Halloween piece! Looks like you are a pro at the free-form fans.
I LOVE THE LITTLE SPIDERS...they are so cute and their webs are great.
I meant to say that their webs are great, but I especially like the black stitching you made. (I got distracted by someone).
Sandy :)
