Ghosts of Christmas Past...

I have my doubts about "those" particular ghosts being a good thing. In my case, I wish they would have stayed in the past. In the late 1980's, we needed a quick last minute gift. I whipped together a little lap quilt for the MIL's wheel chair. The blocks were leftover from my house quilt. I suppose,in hindsight, it was a quick(and dirty) quilt, but it was more effort than her son(my ex) made. She seemed to like the quilt, and I promply forgot about it. Several years later, in 1995, she died. And lo and behold, her DD's thought the quilt should come back to me...gosh..what did I do to deserve that? I have to admit it was not a quilt made with love, just duty. I put it together and tied it. I even brought the back over to the front and zigzagged it down.. Needless to say, I wasn't thrilled to get it back. I tried to pawn it off on the kids, but they didn't want it. It languished for awhile, and one day I decided to utility quilt it.As I quilted I snipped the ties. Can't say I like it better, but I'm going to continue. Embellishments are next. It's definitely a blank canvas, and I may even try some applique. Ebby hasn't given it her snooze test, as yet. Her new best thing is the bonnet there on the bed. What fascinates her is the 1/8" ribbon. I tied it so she can't pull it out completely. It's so narrow and so slippery it drives her crazy trying to catch it..LOL The white you see on her underside is the top of her bikini markings. And just for the record, my ex is the one in the back in the dark red turtleneck..*S* Posted by Picasa

No matter what you feel, it is still a gift made by your hand. Very sweet of you to do. Now you and Ebby can enjoy *s*
Merry Christmas!!!

You say she liked the quilt - and in the photo she certainly looks as though she likes it. It may not be perfect to you, but you made it for her, and that's what people appreciate. In any case, I'm with Angie, looks great to me.

I like it too! What sorts of embellishments were you thinking of?

Maybe you should applique cats everywhere, on the grass, on the rooftops, etc., and make that Ebby's quilt. :)

Oh no don't tell it is so. You mean I will have ghosts of my MIL hanging around forever. I do like the quilt and am excited to see how you embellish it. Have a wonderful Christmas.

I was thinking the same thing as Dawn - give the quilt to Ebby!!! You know she'll appreciate it.

I agree with Dawn and Tonya - Ebby needs a quilt of her own. Think of how much fun she could have with embellishments.

I agree with everyone--turn this sow's ear into a silk purse for Ebby!

Yes, yes! Give the quilt to Ebby after you finish "remaking it". Put some kitties by those houses!

At least she liked it. The only unhappy memories I have of Christmas involve my mother-in-law. She was a very selfish woman who always felt no one was good enough for her children so none of us spouses ever felt accepted all those years. I made many gifts for her all those years. The first - the Christmas after we were married - was greeted with a turned-up nose and question of "What is that? That is my gift? You couldn't spend money on me?" It wa a Christmas wall hanging that ended up in the garbage shortly after Christmas. Granted it was when I was still learning but it was the best I could do at the time and I thought it would look perfect on her wall. It was years before I tried making anything else for her. When I finally did it was a large quilt for her bed. I spread it on the bed that Christmas, and within a few weeks it was in the closet, never again to see the light of day. She died two years ago January - a bitter, shriveled neglected old woman at 91. She always lived in Seattle, about 3 hours away, and the last few years Fred always told me I didn't need to go when he went up to see her. I was so thankful for that. I always tried to be a good daughter in law, but I never, ever had a real chance to do so.

What an ugly story - I certainly won't leave you with that! Your package went out priority mail on Tuesday night so I sure hope you get it tomorrow if you've not gotten it already.

Have a wonderful Christmas. Thank you for your quilty friendship - it is valued so highly by those of us who read your blog!

I think it is lovely that they gave the quilt back to you when they could easily have thrown it away. I love house quilts. I'm sure your cat will enjoy snoozing on it after you've had your fun with embellishments. Happy xmas to you :)
