Bringing Up Ebony....

I'm pretty sure that some of you gals who have cats know this already, but Ebby is my first feline to come into my home at a mature age. I've been learning how different that is from bringing home 'baby' LOL.
I suppose since I have a need to educate to the "max" of a creatures potential, I assumed ALOT....boy, did I ever! I simply can't imagine NOT playing with my kitty, young or old. What I've learned is that Ebby must have been left on her own...and only played as she could devise. So ALL the kitten things work with her, altho she looks at me as if I haven't got a brain in my head..*G*. December brought a new observation...I was sewing and she was laying on the carpet next to my chair. I have a fairly large(by default) TV in my sewing room. It sits at machine level and I can reach it without getting up. So she was pretty close to the large screen. The movie was Ice Age, and as I glanced down, she was staring at the screen with her ears perked up. I was surprised. So I watched her off and on for the next 15 minutes and her eyes never left the screen. This was new to both of us!
I re-arranged the bedroom in Dec. and that brought a very small tv to stand on my low dresser, right next to the bed. The first time I was laying in bed watching Animal Planet and she was on the bed, she saw a cat on tv and went bonkers!!! Yes, she can tell a cat from a dog, and adores any birds that might be shown. Now she lays on the bed and waits for me to turn the tv to Animal Planet..LOL. This morning I was crocheting with my morning coffee in the front room watching something on the Discovery channel and a program about squirrels came on. She came flying across the room and put her paws up on the screen. Really profiles her "middle" age spread nicely..*VBG* So I pushed a rubbermaid over there and put a quilt on it.
She sat, stood and laid there for the entire program...turning her back if the commercials lasted more than a minute or two.
She's been in here complaining ever since I came to the computer with the camera...LOL. Can I explain that the squirrel program is over???? Wish me luck! Posted by Picasa

Think it may have something to do with the fact that tv's are larger now and better definition? I can't remember my cats (growing up) ever being interested in TV, but Toby just sat and watched most of the Purina Dog Challenges with me just now... :)

He was avidly interested in the agility trials and frisbee contests... lol

Our Vincent has never shown the slightest interest in TV, but then he has two sliders to look out and watch the birds and squirrels in real life.
When our TV is on at night, he snoozes, just like my hubby! :)

Oh Finn this is soo funny! I never had a cat so I've never seen this before! I'm so glad you two found each other!

Harper is pretty selective about her tv watching, but every once in a while a program will draw her full attention and it's joy to watch. I'm just so glad that you and Ebby are having all these fun adventures together. I'm always waiting to hear what you two are up to now *s*

So Ebony is a TV watcher, huh? How much the two of you have together. Maybe you should see if she has any interest in Alex Anderson.

you haven't yet turned your mouse cursror into a fish or bird zooming around the computer screen I take it :-)

That is just too funny. They have great personalities don't they. I have a good time with my new babies just moving the mouse around on the screen as they sit in my lap and try to catch it. You will have to show Ebbie that one.

What a lovely post!
My dogs dont take a jot of notice of the TV, except if there is a dog in distress mode, barking!

That is a great story! I am sure she thinks that squirrel must be hiding in that box somewhere. She seems like a wonderful cat.

Sound like you need to get her some wildlife videos. LOL! I do so love coming here to read "The Continuing Adventures of Ebby and Finn".

My dogs and I used to watch the Eukanuba cup dog show together to unwind after I got home from work. We all loved it!

My cats do that too, Mickey use to go look behind the TV to see where the birds flew off to. Nancy in MT

My cats ignore the tv, even when it's showing other cats or birds. I've caught Lily staring at the screen for a minute or two, but that's it. Glad Ebony has ways to entertain herself.

oh ho, isn't that a hoot? Ebby watching tv...and your delight as well. I have to say Zoe gets excited when the tv doorbell rings...she will run to the door- and we have to explain there is no one there! Then we end up opening the door to prove it...as she is certain there is someone out there. Aren't our pets entertaining!

BIG SMILE!!!!!
Rhapsody is my TV watcher... She loves Wild America - especially when they pan and you can see something chasing something...

And a couple years ago Target had their dog as a moving advertisement on Yahoo... Rhapsody would try to catch that dog - & when he left the screen, she would check the back of the laptop to find it... TOOOOOO CUTE!

Aaaw...she'll just have to wait like the rest of us for the re-runs, squirrel show or otherwise!

Have you heard of the people who leave the tv on Animal Planet for their cats. I think they even have certain shows that are MADE for cats watching tv. I'll look into it for you.

My cats watch it all the time. Noodle more than Pixel. Noodle lays on the coffee table and watches!

My cats LOVE Animal Planet! I know there are videos intended just for the entertainment of cats. We used to own one (I think it was called Cat TV). When we popped into the VCR, the cats came running from all over the house to watch. Too fun!

Isn't that something---you two will be watching Animal Planet 24/7 if she gets her way. We think that Pippi does watch TV occasionally--she watches the ball when the golfers are putting but does not try to climb up to it or paw the screen but that might just be a positioning thing.

What a perfect match you two are!

I love hearing all about your adventures with Ebby, kind of makes me wish our own kitty wasn't so skittish.

My Tangled Threads friend Kathi has a video called "Cat Tales" thats especially for this very thing. Lots of scenes with birds and squirrels, etc. Her cat will sit and watch the video for an hour or more. It's really fun to watch her.

LOL Finn - now you've got something to do together!!

Oh Finn - that is so lovely and she looks so interested in what is going on. You don't think she was human in a previous life? All my 2 do is to look at the flames flickering in the wood burners.

Happy New year to you both.

I think it's pretty amazing when a cat realizes that the shapes on a TV are supposed to be a representation of real things. My cats never glance at the TV. Amazing Ebby! You might have to get a machine that records TV shows and keep it busy recording that show about the squirrels!
