Pieces from the past...

I think almost everyone has this Little Quilts book. It's very much a "wish book", at least for me..*VBS*. There are directions for a few of the small quilts shown, a 9 patch and a sawtooth star, log cabin with posies, and appliqued stars.
Best of all there are a ton a wonderful pictures of really great little quilts, hung and draped all through the house. It makes you wish you could have all those wonderful quilts and the pieces of furniture they decorate.
This page has always been one of my favorites. It's that 6 orphan blocks quilt. Which isn't Amish at all, despite them putting it with Amish settings. And it just so happens I had a pile of very crude handpieced 9 patches, much like those. They are a far cry from what you would deliberately put into a quilt. Maybe the work of a child. I finally got brave enough to just "do it". I sewed 9(vs.6) of them together yesterday. I'm not sure if I will leave it at the 9(and a square)or if I will reduce it to the 6, as in the picture. I'd really like your opinions!! I'm not very much into primatives, but I love the look of these. The edges will stay uneven and when I quilt it, it probably will be with perle cotton and a bigger stitch. I have one quilt that is considered a 'primative', and I could hang it by the bed with that quilt. Or....I could hang it near my dining room table, next to my egg basket quilt print. First I have to decide if I like this size or not. Once I decide, there will be one more post about this, as I'd like to give the extra blocks away to one of you gals who like primatives..*VBS*

I like them both, but I'm honest with my opinions...so, here goes! I like the rectangle shape, from the wall display, so well...that I would just vote for six blocks, rectangular shape and send the three blocks to one of us :)

I tend to agree Finn. I like the rectangle shape. It looks more childlike(although I love the way you add a little "Finn Spin" to everything you do. It's sweet! I'm up to the eyeballs with projects so I'll pass to the many talented "primative" ladies who come here. I'm in awe of the great work you all do. AWE!

I think the nine blocks look charming. I really like the pink centers of the blocks. So sweet!

I have worn that little book out, drool all over it LOL, from looking at the pictures and dreaming!!! LOVE IT!! I would remove the bottom row, and just make it 6 blocks (MHO). :D

Well, I'm going to disagree with the other ladies and say, keep the nine blocks. I really like the primitive look and those old fabrics are great.

I vote for the 9 blocks. What color perle cotton will you be using for the hand quilting? Pink? Gray? Blue? An additional dark color binding might work or red. I have two little quilts books Celebrate with little quilts and Little Quilts all through the house. On Little quilts all through the house they have a close up of that quilt on page 8. It is really cute. They used a black binding and a simple white diagonal quilting.

9 is just fine! Perfect as a matter of fact.

I like the symmetry of the nine blocks and you've put them together perfectly! No changes required in my opinion.

Coming up for air . . .

I love the nine blocks together just as you have stitched them. A perfect "first" doll quilt that some little lady might have stitched. I tend to find the square sizes easier to use in decorating. Maybe draped over part of a small end table or coffee table.

I like the nine patch size too, although either could be useful for something other than a wall hanging, a table top runner for the 6 block rectangle for example. Square might make a nice large cushion.

I love it as is. I like the block with the big stripes in the center.

What size are the blocks Finn? Or, what size is the square now?

I think if it were me I would take off what shows as the bottom row in your picture and then finish it. Since I have placemats on the brain I'm wondering whether as a 6 block quilt it could be used that way? The little one on the wall in the book photo is charming though.

This may end up making it a tie, but I like the 6 blocks better. Maybe if I had not seen the picture in the book first, but you did say it was your favorite page, so I would go with 6 since it was sparked by something you love. I love the primitive look too.

Hi Finn,I like the 9 blocks BUT if you were to use just 6 blocks try hanging vertically . How's that? A new look? VBG -

To me, nine blocks forming a square makes a wall-hanging. The six blocks look like the cradle quilts I made to fit the family cradle when our children were born. Both lovely in and of themselves. I say choose the one that gives you the best memory........

Oh...I've had many-a-cups of coffee with the girls from Little Quilts. ;-) Love that little book!

I didn't read any previous comments...and you may have already decided...but I'd like to share this anyway...just because. I do love the 6 block setting. It just looks to me like it really wasn't supposed to be that way...but it is! And that's what makes it so charming!

Stay cool, Finn! October is coming!!! ;-)

I am throwing in with the nine block lot myself...just looks perfect to me. whatever you decide, it will be just fine Finn...really. after all, you have to live with it and look at it all the time!

Either one is so nice, but I like the 6-blocker, it's different and looks more oddly childlike. But either is nice. I never had this book until just a few weeks ago when I finally nabbed one on eBay! Now I have one, too :-).

I like the 9 block setting. Lately I've been making more and more pieces that are square instead of rectangle. I can't wait to see it finished.

I don't own "that" Little Quilts book--just one of the really early ones. Made the little flag from there--that looks like a placemat.

Sounds like quilting has been the hangup to not finishing up. Don't be so hard on yourself, Finn. A lot of people don't want to do that part. Guess we keep the long armers in business on the bigger ones at least. One of our area ones is moving back to TN much to our dismay.

I'm going to chime in with the nine blocks -- taking inspiration is good, but changing the size and shape makes it Finn! And why does it have to be displayed with other primative quilts? Why not do a small series of doll sized/miniatures and group them together -- all sorts of colors/combos. It would make a stunning grouping and work to cover an entire wall! (and no, this is not my own original idea -- I've seen it on a couple of blogs recently and I love the look)

I like it as you have interpreted it into a nine-block setting. It "feels" the same, but is better because you have expanded on the idea and expressed yourself therein. Quilter's intent. Love that little book, too!

Oh Finn - I love it just the way it is! Everything about it is just right to my eye *s* the colors, the size, the uneven-ness. My mind is already twirling with fabrics in my stash that would recreate your little piece. Delicious!

This book is marvelous indeed! It is one of mine preferred:)))

I think this is my first visit to your site and I'll definitely return regularly. I may be too late to chime in on the 9 Patch dilemma, but to my mind, if you have nine blocks of similar size, color and style, why wouldn't you use all nine? Sometimes we get too hung up on labeling an item as a doll quilt, table topper, wall hanging, etc. It is what it is--a sweet collection of pink centered blocks. It's lovely--no other label required!
