Friday's Block, like Friday's child is loving and giving. And is one of my favorite orphan blocks. I picked this one up in an antique shop quite a few years ago. The block pattern is an album patch variation. It would be hard to write our name in the center of this one. The block is just under 15". The seams aren't quarter inch, but close. It's hand pieced and by someone with alot of experience. If you look at the navy squares, you can see that the "bits" she added to make the square big enough, aren't the same fabric as the squares.I believe I counted 5 or 6 different prints, all the same shade of navy, just a different print. A scrapbag block for sure..*VBS* And for all you clever gals who guessed I would be making a top from these orphan squares, you are correct! I've made orphan block quilts before, but from my own orphaned blocks. Those that you don't love and didn't use....much like making a sampler except nothing matches or is the same as anything else...LOL. It's the road less taken, and the less than beautiful sister..*VBS* And I like it like that!!

well Finn, this will be one gorgeous orphan block quilt when you get it done-and you will be able to enjoy all these blocks so much better too!
This is my favorite so far. I love the red and blue. How neat to make an orphan quilt from blocks from so many sources. Looking forward to seeing it.
Oh Finn, it's beautiful! I can almost *smell* it. :oP Seriously...you ever notice that old things has that....smell? It's not an icky smell (to me, at least)...just an "old" smell. LOL! I'm weird...I'll stop. :oP
Echoing what others have said....I didn't know you owned a quilt shop!! You have MORE then a pocketful of experience in this life now don't you?? Mercy...the things I could learn from you. Your children and grandchildren are truly blessed. :o)
Have a wonderful Memorial day weekend....hopefully with some stitches thrown in. ;o)
I love the idea of an orphan quilt.
I have seen this same block with the outside "red" peices done in a lighter blue or white. It was a WWII quilt, named Red Cross Quilt.
As to the piecing, I have always been awed when looking at my Grandmother's quilts & seen how she so carefuly pieced smaller pieces together to make largher pieces. I can remember watching her do that.
I have enjoyed viewing all your orphan blocks and the stories behind them. I look forward to seeing the completed quitls with these beautiful blocks. Sometimes I think we get hung on the the perfect or what we think is or should be perfect. Thanks again for sharing.
thank you so much for "saving" the work of the women who came before us. I'd keep all the shapes which we think as misshapen but are just unique. And this makes them so special.
This orphan block...found a happy home when you got sight of it Dear Finn! I so admire how many projects you complete...its almost unreal for me to comtemplate...grin.
I am looking forward to see your orphan block quilt. The block looks gorgeous !
Oh it will be an amazing quilt with all those fingers and all that history! What colour are you going to use for sashings/borders? A navy or similar to tie it all together, or something completely subtle?
What a great idea Finn.
Hi Finn, Yeap your right you had been to my blog before and it was magenta and pink, you have a good memory....I love looking at all your orphan blocks, you are great at the written word too.. Hugs Tina
I'm glad to hear the orphans will have a home at last. I'm a huge fan of quilts that have been made with old blocks in this way.Wow, that was a lot of pins marking spots where bits had to be joined. Much love has gone into that block.
Oh Finn, you had me guessing right til the end! And the answer should have been so obvious! lol. This will be a wonderful quilt. Can't wait to see it!
Oh baby - Friday's block is wonderful! And that red fabric - to DIE for! Wish they would repro that print!
