On the back side, I put a pin in each square that has been pieced to get what was needed before she cut her square. None of the HST are pieced, and none of the 5 center squares are pieced. This is a 25 patch block. 12 of the squares are pieced to make them big enough. A few years back, making a top from feedsack and other Depression era scraps, I honored this tradition, adding a tiny bit more to a corner, or where ever it was needed to get a 2.5" sq. from my scrap. It's both humbling and liberating. And feels like a connection to the women who made quilts before us. It's almost like a humility block in quilts from yesteryear..*S* Posted by Picasa

You're so right about piecing fabrics to make an individual square within a block being a connection to quilters of the past. Our "foremothers" didn't have the luxury of running to the LQS to buy another fat quarter of the fabric they needed.

The first time I added a strip of fabric to the side of a block to make it the same size as the rest in my blocks I really felt liberated and connected to the past.

I saw that right away. Before I started reading I said to my screen...ow, she pieced together each of the blue sq's. At first I thought maybe she pieced what looks like about 1/2" or a 1/4" onto a strip and then cut her squares...but they didn't do strip pieceing and the blues are all different!! So she did each one by hand.

Now with all that work....why do you think she didn't use the square? Maybe she had too many and this was left over? I'd hate to think she did the work and THEN got bored!
