What I wanted you to see on this square, from the lower right corner of the block, is that she needed to use 3 scraps to get her 3" square. One other corner also has 3 pieces.

This is a real step back in history - I think these women would be so proud if they knew all these blocks were being used together in a quilt. :)
And what a salute to fabric economy!
Nowadays we would throw away pieces even larger than THAT!! Although, if I really only had scraps left to finish and I wanted the reds in those areas I would piece it together.
Look at those tiny stitches. She was a clever woman!
