Little Sam is still pretty little, despite his 10 years. Questions from Wednesday, answers on Friday..*S*. Jane asked about Sam. Sam is a neat little boy with very special needs. I have pictures of him, but out of respect for a handicapped child, I choose not to post them. The bug bottle quilt is a "just for fun" quilt I made him for his 5th birthday. I had made him two before this one, his baby quilt and one for his "big boy bed". After the bottles, he got one with flannel back, for his wheelchair trips in the van. Sam turned 10 about Mother's Day..I'm running very slow this year...but the stars are coming..*VBS*
The Civil War book I borrowed was "Hidden In View", by J. Tobin and R. Dobard. There are quilt blocks based on THIS book. Holly has a great quilt made of them over at http://andsewitis.blogspot.com/ Look for her quilt in her March 23,2006 entry. I'm hoping this book will inspire me. The book I'm toying with buying is called "The Civil War Sampler Quilt". It has journal entries from 10 women and 121 6" quilt patterns that are authentic to that period. The author is Rosemary Youngs. I think I want to do a Civil War quilt as a longer term project, but am still on the fence about it. I'd like it to be realistic, but I don't like muddy colors. And I don't think clear colors, even if they aren't bright are going to "cut it". So I need to think about it.
I'm toying with just picking my own blocks, based on reading, and then making them in either 6 or 8"size. I really don't want to create another UFO, based on not thinking things through. It's a problem that has plagued me through out my life.
I worked on the teapot handle yesterday, and I think I'm going to be ok...thanks for all the help and encouraging comments..*S* Didn't sew much, I had first of the month things to do, and an old friend to pay my respects to at the local funeral home. She would have been 96 in Oct....we shared a birthday month, and while we didn't always see eye to eye, you couldn't not love that fiesty old lady!!! My hats off to you, Mabel....you ran a good race. I will miss knowing you are in the world. You are in the arms of the angels....rest well old friend.

Cute quilt... looks just like a little boy. I cut and pasted the picture for an idea for 'one of these days' boy baby gift.

I saw that quilt once when I think, I linked from Tonyas and went loking around on her blog. Very nice quilt!

Now, I love the bug quilt! I bet it was the perfect thing for Sam because he has all the neat bold prints to examine and keep his mind busy and intriqued! Perfect idea!

Sadly, I hate to say that most of the cival war prints are muddy. Although there is a line out now that I bought a lot from that are in the reds and mustard colors. The reds are sortof muddy and barn red, and then the yellows are called something wierd???? I can't remember right now. I'll snap a pic and show you what I have If you'd like? Those colors are somewhat clear and it would make a great quilt with some green thrown in the mix.

Hi Finn,
I like Sams quilt. Looks like Jars of Happiness.
Sorry to hear about the loss of your friend Mabel. Fiesty, always makes you stay on your toes in a friendship and nothing wrong with that : )

the quilt is wonderful. And thank you for your discrection on posting pictures of Sam.... I know its not always a popular decision these days, but with the internet you just never know who's looking at what why. Even in real life there's enough "gauwking" who needs to encourage it!

I love these bug jar quilts. Wish they'd been around 20 or so years ago when I had a kid who was CRAZY about insects. He's 24 and 6'4 now--the bug jar idea probably just wouldn't fly with him any more.

Thanks for the answers, Finn!

I've volunteered and worked with a lot of special kids and adults, and they've always taught me a lot more than I taught them.

It's good you got a bit of sewing in amidst all the "have to's"

Always a fun quilt.
