Remember Me?

Well, here I am again, a previous post re-visited because now it's a finished wall hanging. The pattern is one of Helen Thorne's. She taught our spring workshop one year. I'm happy that it is quilted and bound. I liked it alot more back when I pieced it. Tastes do change. It's machine quilted, with some hand stitching, some embroidery and I'm

still thinking about maybe embellishing it. Ms. Thorne was quite upset with me at the time. The sky fabric was the sky fabric I chose. I was working along and she stopped at my table, took one look and said "Did you know that sky fabric is a directional fabric? I said "yes"...*G* She looked again at it, then at me, shook her head and walked away. Do you suppose Finn might have been at work way back then..*VBG*. After that my piece was known as the "Swamp Cabin"...with a bad storm coming in.

Finn, I like it. You are a rebel and a gal that follows her own heart. We wouldn't want you any other way.

Hey, it is your quilt--she can shake her head all she wants. If you wanted to make an exact duplicate of hers then you would have, right?

I like the stuff you used for the water and if you want your sky to be yellowish then you went for it!

Reminds me very much of a stitchery class I attended recently, where the teacher preached putting every scrap of embroidery floss around a piece of stiff paper, writing the colour # on it.
I have my thread sorted on colour groups in zip lock bags, and I can not care less about colour numbers when I am having fun with thread,
unless I am doing counted cross stitches, which I was not - and the cross stitches comes in kits anyway.
The teacher held up one of my zip locks and said it was a classical example on how not to do it......
I could tell her that I have been keeping that system for many years and it works like a charm, and that I rather would be stitching than fine sorting. She did not make me blush and make excuses.
I make stitchery like I like to quilt, with scraps and what I have at hand :-) She was the loser on that one - it felt good ;-))

The sky is truly lovely, and the water, too. Which sky fabrics did she like in the class?

She was obviously a member of the quilt police. Pay no attention to her and go on marching to your own drum. It's alot more fun that way.

I don't see anything wrong with your sky fabric. About 10 years ago I was on the search for good "sky" fabrics I ended up with quite a few "gray skies" and even some sunrise/sunset skies along with my blues.

I think your sky is wonderful and shame on her for trying to get you to make a cookie cutter quilt. If you'd have wanted a quilt just like hers you'da bought a kit!

And I agree with Linda - I LOVE that water fabric.

Who wants a carbon copy quilt of anyone else? I'm surprised at her...I seen her books, I'm really disappointed that she doesn't promote creativity.

P.S> Thanks for the 'pep' talk. Every once in a while you need someone to jerk you around make make you see 'the light'...you're the best.

Really? Looks more to me like a sunset.

I was thinking it was a dawn scene, myself, with the sky just clearing.

But if I see three snakes at dawn, I'm going to take it as a bad sign of things to come and go back to bed!

Love Swamp Cabin, but especially love the fact that you did it YOUR way!

I agree with ForestJane, it looks like the sky just before the sun breaks the horizon. I always thought teachers were supposed to inspire creativity-too bad yours was a little too rigid.
I have to confess-I'm a little stumped by the 3 "animals?" at the top. At first I thought they were beavers, then I thought snakes?

I don't get it. Looks like great sky to me. Really love those fish in the sea water fabric. It was a super find for this. I think it is fine to like many different styles or quilting.

I love your house by the lake and you have to have a storm once in a while to fill up the lake.

Stupid woman - it's all down to insecurity - heaven help anyone who shows any initiative or creativity after all they might turn out with something better than hers and that would never do would it :o) As a studier of paintings when working on my art O level at school I quickly came to realise that if people looked at what is actually there rather than what their brain thinks should be there then the sky is seldom blue - I really like the sky Finn - take no notice - actually I don't really think you did anyway :o) Good for you
