Outside my window... the window box on my little patio is 4 or 5 feet from where I sit at the computer. Can you imagine my surprise on this cool overcast morning, to look up and see a hummingbird checking out the flowers. There really isn't any red there, but apparently the bright pinks are close enough. It was a female, dull in color by comparison to her flashy mate. She was only there for a second or two, and I felt so honored to have seen her sooooo close up.
This green and yellow block, a variation on a double four patch is a left over from the Grandson#3's quilt. I still haven't found the picture to share, but here's the layout. You get great long diagonal runs both directions.
And last, but not least what I am puttering with in the evenings. Darcie, at http://quiltingbydarcie.blogspot.com/ showed us what she had going..crocheting a rug from her hand dyed fabrics. I am using a K hook, and using up odds and ends, the ones that get really "stringy" as they lanquish in your 1.5" strips bin. It's darker than it looks here, and it measures about 13" right now. It's great fun, you don't have to concentrate much once the first rows are done...and it just GOBBLES up the fabric strips. If I were cutting fresh strips, I would cut them narrower than 1.5" I think 3/4's might be just about right. It's one of those things you have to experiment with a little. It's not going to be a huge rug, probably 24" to 30" will be as big as I want it. It came to me, that a smaller version would probably be ideal to hold a sweaty glass or hot cup of coffee or tea.

Very Very cool!! Love the crocheted rug. I haven't picked up my needles in about 2 years. About the same time I found quilting, I stopped crocheting. It's tough on the hands and forearms. But I did get a crocheted jacket pattern from Lion Brand today and I printed it out. Who knows!
So do you like in a little house like the ones across the street? They look really nice. Hubby and I were talking about where we might move when he retires. Someplace with a cheaper cost of living.
Do you have plans for the left overs from grandson's quilt? I'm glad that you can open the windows and get some fresh air and see nature. It really puts things into perspective.
Thanks so much for your wonderful praise and comments over at my place. As always they are greatly appreciated!
You are doing such a great job on that rug and the new scrappy-stash quilt is coming along nicely.
Fun rug, Finn. Great to see pictures of your gorgeous hummingbird-attracting flowers too.
Place mats...what a great idea. Love the rug and it's so tempting to try.
You know, I haven't seen many hummingbirds this year at all.
If you are going to make a mug cozy, I wonder if you could make each row a little tighter and have it curve up like a insulated sleeve? Tighten it around your mug as you crochet it... lol
I'm going to have to make one of these pretty crocheted rugs. I love all your pieces and pictures from the past, Finn.
we are enjoying hummingbirds this summer. last summer not too many!! and butterflies galore.. we have row of butterfly bushes and sunday morning we counted 26!!
LOVE your little cottage. seems just right to me, goldilocks!!
