The Inspiration and the source of the Waterwheel pattern. This book,"Pieces of The Past" by Nancy Martin, published in 1986, was where I got my pattern. This book is pre-rotary cutter. I know my pieces were template cut, and that seems to take forever when there are lots of small triangles.
Below is a scan of what little they showed you if you wanted to make this quilt.

The antique version of this one isn't in the book. Most are shown as the antique quilt
and the newer version. This one(8" blocks) was pieced by Marsha McClousky, but is owned by Nancy Martin. A second book came out in 1990, called "Threads of Time" and I also have that one. If you truly love the look of old quilts, buy these two books if you can find them. Posted by Picasa

Beautiful work! I tried to comment on your lovely fall post yesterday, but blogger was just being a beast! Sounds like you're a little more "fallish" than we are yet!

Finn, again you are inspiring me to pick up my little civil war quilt. I did some quilting on it when on the plane for vacation and it has sat since then. I am leaving for a few days R&R at Cape May NJ so I think i will take my little quilt with me for the journey.

my quilting is no way as even and small as yours. your work is beautiful.

Oh Finn, that quilt is wonderful!! Love the colors and the quilting in it!! As always, you are such an inspiration. By the way, my rug is up to 23". Haven't had much time to work on anything for running for drs. appts. I need to make a 3-hr trip one day next week to help a sister start a wallhanging. She has no quilt experience, just broke an ankle and will be "confined" for about 6 wks, and I promised to run up and teach her some "quilt therapy". LOL Maybe that will motivate me back to my quilting, hmmmm? :)

Oh this is one of my most favorite books! I agree!

I'm so glad to be catching up with you again! I had such fun at retreat, but feel like it has been ages since I"ve "seen" you!

These are two of my most favorite quilt books of all time. The covers have ragged edges and the pages are showing wear. I've read them over and over and over since I bought them new when they were first published. I wanted to do almost every single quilt in the first one. This is when I truly fell in love with quilting, and wanted to make quilts that looked old like Nancy and Marsha's. I did a few of them - including the ocean waves with the large double pink squares. There are still lots in that book that I want to do.

What a wonderful quilt collection you have. And book collection too. It always amazes me how different fabrics change the pattern. Your quilting story is a good one to remind us not to put off things we went to do. You might not have this great quilt to treasure now if you had put off making it then.

I love your quilt. I can remember when Nancy Martin and 'That Patchwork Place' were like the leaders in the late 80's early 90's..

The waterwheel quilt is gorgeous!!! sounds like you love autumn as much as I do. The geese are flying past and taking a layover on the local pond. What a great sound, a V of geese honking overhead. Our leaves are not changing yet, but it won't be long... A few trees are hinting at color. Happy Autumn to you!

How nice of you to show where you got the pattern. I really like the simplicity of the pattern...and simply beautiful way the colors & patterns blend in and out like shadows and sunshine. Just my thoughts....all for free...*vbs* Hope you've had a good day. I need to go clean up the kitchen after supper...trouble is, I'm ultra relaxed right now.
