directions and made up the vertical rows. One side darks, the other, lights. How can you go wrong? You trim off the triangles edges, you line up the rows and presto...it all works. BUT it didn't. What should have gone up and down like a nice WWW, didn't match up. It zigged and zagged. I was angry. I was frustrated...I threw it down in disgust. I walked away.
When I finally came back to it, I took the long sections and cut them all into 6.5" squares..now, by golly, things would match one way or another. I didn't take time to see if I would work out a design or pattern, I just joined them up and sewed them. I don't hate the quilt...but close.
In my opinion, the only redeeming factor is that I love the borders I used. Gone were any of the "shoulds" or "have toos"..I cut strips and I bordered it. It's pretty wild...and a little outrageous. The binding is equally without order or reason.Looking at these pictures I took yesterday, I see a couple of possible layouts I had never considered. I guess we do learn as we go...*VBS*
I did hand quilt it with perle cotton, but it is a quilt that rarely sees the light of day. Definitely an UGLY DUCKING of a quilt.

I have to disagree. This is NO ugly duckling! In fact I quite like it and would be sending my address so you could mail it to me but it appears Ebby has put in first dibs. *VBG*
Ahhh -- now you liked it enought to hand quilt it. That's a pretty big commitment. You must have known in the back of your head that Ebby was going to pick it for her own someday.
Well Finn, I have to tell you I like it. It has to much character and charm to be an ugly duckling. Clever on selvaging a quilt you didn't like. Yes I have made quilts that don't turn out as I thought but as with Ebby someone will love them.
Well, you know what, I like it too. It has that crazy randomness that I adore.
Oh, Finn, I don't see any uggly ducking here ! On the contrary, I think your quilt is a charming one and I like it very much....
Think of all those pionneers quilts, now proudly hanging in museums. Not all of them are perfect, and yet they have "that special touch", that makes them unique and charming... just like yours, Finn ! Please cherish it a lot, and place it into the light !

Woo hoo! My favorite kind of quilt! Love it. Just full of memories, surprises, favorites, not favorites, pieces from that quilt you ...., and chunks of sale favorite ... to me, this is a winner! More is more! And you must have had some fond thoughts as you hand quilted it. Some of my favorite are those that I started chopping on, the that's what happened here.
I made the Pioneer Braid with Christmas fabrics, but I was lucky enough to be given the hint to NOT cut until AFTER sewing the strips together. And, I pinned fairly frequently to be certain they matched up . . . just in case you want to give it another try someday! I donated mine to the Catherine Peachey Fund for Breast Cancer Research at Indiana University Medical Center, and it sold at auction several years ago for about $1800!
It's an absolutely lovely quilt! and rather unique, one of a kind :)

Not ugly at all - definitely maverick, and of course, it's even more special now that it has been made a bit warmer with Ebby's insulative hair!

Okay Ms. Finn, personally I see a swan there... I like your "ugly ducking" quilt! Its scrappy as can be and I so love scrappy!! and it looks like to me Ebby agrees with me!! So now that ugly ducking is a swan!!!!! :O)...
You know Finn, I don't think that's an ugly quilt at all! It has so many wonderful qualities. I love scrappy quilts, I love braids, and I love pieced borders. See, there's so much to love about this quilt! I can definitely see why Ebby loves it!

I love this quilt...its totally cheerful. I thought sure you were going to say it was a 'piece of cake' to make. I also love your fabrics...oh what a riot of gorgeous colors!!
Your quilt looks great to me, but you have spent so much time on it's making and studied it so minutely that you perhaps only see it's imperfections and it's parts rather than the whole it has become. It's a little bit like our children, others may say they're great but sometimes we forget to look past their small imperfections we know so well to the whole child(quilt) we have successfully put together! Cheers.
And here I said Ebby had good taste in quilts. I LOVE this one Finn - if for no other reason that it is a bit of an ugly duckling. To me it is a great example of making lemonade from quilting lemons - I love all the wonderful scraps!
