and a soft gray beginning to the day. As if we weather watchers hang poised, in anticipation of what comes next. The frosty, gleaming, wildness of Winter has yet to make a grand entrance onto the stage of our lives. We wait, peering this way and that, smelling the air for wood smoke, watching the weather forecast and the clouds that scurry by, heading east. The stage is all set, the shortest day of the year is approaching. The longest darkness and the turning towards the light will come, with or without snow and Ms. Winter. We can count on the turning of the seasons. On the home front, my closest neighbor has gone to her daughter's for the winter. She is quite elderly and frail. News came this week of her decision. It was a big yellow moving van. It loaded all her furniture and took it to storage. I'm sad. Lucille was such a sweet neighbor. Our paths only crossed occasionally, but I was fond of her. On the cold, windy days of mid winter, if I hurried, I could get both of our garbage cans to the curb before she had to bundle up and come out. And if I listened for the truck, I could get them back up to the gargage again...*VBS* In return, if I forgot it was garbage day, she took my can, along with hers. I will miss Lucille.
A call from the resident manager last evening confirmed what I already knew...a new person is moving in as soon as the carpet is cleaned and dries. Probably later this evening or first thing tomorrow. My new neighbor will be Gloria. She is 63 and very, very happy to gotten a unit out here, just a mile from town, and is such a lovely complex. I'm sure it will be a good thing, but for today I'll think about Lucille, and miss her a bit more...*VBS* I often think of Robert Frost's poem "Good Fences Make Good Neighbors", and while I understand the sentiment, I think maybe smiles make good neighbors too.

My Mom always told me that envy was a sin...but alas, I just can't help having it...LOL you have such a wonderful way with words, Finn, and I always love reading your posts, anxiously looking every day for yours first to see if you have a new one up....I would love being your neighbor, so I believe that Gloria is lucky that you are there. And I KNOW that Lucille will miss you every bit as much as you will miss her.
Speaking of weather, it certainly doesn't 'feel' like Christmas and ole Man Winter are here in TN. It's beautiful, sunny, in the 60s...but I long for cold, grey, snow-laden clouds for this time of year. :)
How I long to have a neighbor like your's: the old or the new. What I have is a moron who drags cars and garage sale items into the backyard and then lets them slowly rust into piles. At last count there were 13 unmoving cars in and around his house. *sigh* Sew, appreciate what you have and I really do agree with Robert Frost.
Even when we don't know a neighbor well, it can be comforting just to know they are there. I hope that you will soon have that comfortable feeling with Gloria.
Finn, I hope you are keeping these posts and others of a similar nature some where for your children and grandchildren to find somewhere in the far future to amaze and comfort them. What a woman of many gifts your are!
We've recently lost two of our very good neighbors. I totally understand your feelings about Lucille leaving. Maybe Gloria will be a wonderful new friend and help fill that "empty spot"
((hugs))
I'm so loving the woodcuts you are sharing, and your prose to go along with each one. You have such a wonderful way with words - just as wonderful as the way you work with fabric. Beautiful pictures you weave for us, each sentence adding a bit more color to the picture. It is such a joy to read your posts!
PS. I hope your new neighbor will turn out to be a nice friend also. I'm sure your welcoming smile will make her feel very welcome - I've not any doubt about that.
I am sorry to hear you are loosing a good neighbor,, but am hopeful for you that your new neighbor will be a great one!!
I am way behind on blog writing and reading, I managed to post really quickly today, just to let folks know whats up....
hope Gloria comes to be just as good a neighbor...
Oh, Finn... And time moves on. Here's a VBS for you while today is still here.
Beautiful, Finn...absolutely beautiful. Anyone would be lucky to have a dear, sweet spirit such as you in any neighborhood, anywhere!
Karma will be kind to you dear Finn :)
Finn, you are being sooo poetic, putting words together like a patchwork quilt, sometimes all in order 'by the book' and sometimes all scrappy, but definitely all Finn! Love it! Wish you were my neighbor!
