Where have all the flowers gone....?

With the coming of spring, I find myself looking back, longily, at pictures of my gardens. Here are a couple snapshots from August- 2002. If only I had known that by late summer, I would choose to list my house and have it sold in 2 days, I would have taken pictures of my tulips and daffodils. I didn't know(that May) that in August I would be gone. Temporarily homeless, living in Betsy and Joe's guesthouse, and looking for an apartment. I am happy that Jean urged me to snap these pictures. The tulips were long gone, as was the bleeding heart and forget-me-nots. The bee balm had gone to seed
and coral bells were done blooming. I had been working on the look of English cottage gardens. Filled helter-skelter with colors, different heights, and all of it tossed and tumbled into a glorious disarray..*VBS* Each spring I added a few more perennnials. Between the house payment, insurance and left over medical bills, I had a limited budget for the garden(and a few other things as well..LOL) You can fill in with annuals, and get 'starts' from friends...and I did. Jean took starts of many of my perennials, and I am able to get some back from her now. I believe it doesn't do any good to miss a 'thing' beyond what is reasonable. These days I 'make do' with what flowers I can grow at my little town house..*VBS* And my little female hummingbird thanks me each time she shops at my Finn-Dixie of the North..*VBS* Fushia and red coming right up, just for her.
While looking for the garden pictures, I came across two more baby quilts I did for charity giving. If you need a fast easy quilt, this works. Only 6 of the 12" friendship stars in the first one, keep the background all the same and do lots of 4 patch corners. Setting block is a puss in the corner. Line up the diagonal runs of 4 patch as you assemble into blocks. In the second quilt is 12 FS stars, made using HST's as the corners. And I made half the stars yellow, instead of all blue. 3" borders brings the size up to 42" X 54". That can be backed with 1.5 yds of flannel or regular cotton.
No new sewing happening right now, as I struggle with lung congestion, shortness of breath and a hacking cough. I am trying to restore order in my new studio....which current looks like a yard sale, with piles everywhere...*VBS* I will take pictures as things improve a little. Hope you all are having a good May 3rd.

One of the things I miss the most is the flowers beds in the backyard. I looked at hydrangea bushes today in SAms and would die for one..but not in a condo!

Finn, sorry I've been missing from blogland for so long! Good luck with the cleaning and with the cough!

Your gardens might be gone in real life but they'll always live on in your mind. I do so love the look of a cottage garden. Unfortunately I have too many trees to be able to grow flowers. So I buy mine weekly at the grocery store to keep a bit of color on my table.

the friendship star has always been one of my favorite patterns. Both of these are lovely.

Get better soon! And I look forward to pictures of your new room. (((HUGS)))

Our stuff got zapped when the Siberian Express came slamming down here for about a week. The Rose of Sharon bush is just now starting to recover. The lack of rain has not helped either. That's where ours went---did the buyers keep any of your plantings??

I like the idea of the big friendship stars with the scrappy corners. Good in both colorways! Aline did one with like positive/negative of the same prints that I will probably quilt tomorrow--today, binding. I should be able to finish that up and share a pic of Jeanne's quilt tomorrow. That's the goal anyway.

Have you seen the doctor about that cough? Not sure what cough med DJ's doc prescribed when we both had it but that stuff was the only thing that seemed to help either of us 2 wks into it.

Just my style of garden - planting what suits my fancy when I stop in at the nursery.
