Monday Musings: I was over at Sandra's (http://sandybags.blogspot.com/ )last evening, and she is telling about the kookaburras in the tree tops singing in the morning. I haven't seen or thought about kookaburras for a very long time..*VBG* So I'm curious...how many of you have memories of a song about the kookaburra bird? It's been playing itself over and over in my head all night..."kookaburra sittin' in the old gum tree, mighty, mighty king of the bush is he..laugh kookaburra, laugh kookaburra, how gay your life must be"..........

Sandra had pictures of the tree tops, but no birds were seen by me...anyone have a picture of this bird?? And does he make a laughing sound? I wonder...

I remember that song! (I saw one at the Baltimore Zoo several years ago... I hope to see or at least hear them when I am in Australia & innumerable other species of Australian Fauna and Flora!)

I too remember that song! My kids even sang it growing up. Don't know much about the bird though but love the song.

Thank you for stopping in on my blog site and leaving such nice comments.

We used to sing that song as a "round" at summer camp -- a LONG time ago!!!
Jeanne, who's humming now, too :)

You know what Finn?
I remember that song very well, but I always thought it was about a bear...a kooka bear. I never realized that it was about a bird.*ROFLOL*

Wendy over at The Tasmanian Trail has a picture of a pair of cute kookaburras in her most recent post.

Glad you liked the orchids.

That's a Girl Scout camp song that we also sang over and over in rounds around the campfire!

We used to sing that song too in England in the 60's and 70's. "Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree, merry merry king of the bush is he, laugh kookaburra laugh kookaburra, gay your life must be". We would sing it in rounds. It really does sound like a laugh!

When I was in her blog...and reading about the kookabura...I had the same song going 'round in my head! 'Cept some of my words were missing...and there was a little bit of ba-ba-ba-boppin' going on! ;-)

I know that song too, and since you wrote some of the words out and I read them, that song is in my head now too : )

There's another not so deferent version:

Kookaburra sits on the electric wire
Jumping up and down with his pants on fire
Laugh kookaburra laugh kookaburra laugh
How gay your life must be!!

We used to sing this all the time at school (many moons ago) :)
