What's on Deck for June??? Ok..you have to ignore the blue and sunflower part...LOL, that one is Betsy's runner. We were sharing a design wall at our quilt retreat last Oct. What I'm on board to finish up this month are the blocks on the left. The beginnings of my Country Roads quilt. Since it's just pinned in place, you can see the block divisions. The colors aren't that dark, this is a scanned image taken with a regular camera at retreat. Block and quilt information is given below this posting. The layout I will probably use isn't the one shown in the magazine I got the idea from...as usual, I'm doing it my way....how about you???

That's the difference between inspiration and creativity - the pattern in the magazine may inspire us but we wouldn't be creative if we didn't do it our own way! Keep on doing it your way Finn! :-) Fiona
I'm with Betsy---I probably would have seen that you could make a big HST but then I am always looking for ways to eliminate extra sewing lines. How do you think I figured out the "Whatever" short cut, LOL. Gotta do it our own way and with our own fav techniques or the process is frustrating.
I change my mind so much as I go that I don't think I've ever cut a whole quilt out at once.
It must be fun to have all the pieces ready to sew together.
I guess the first one I'll have all cut out is the Yellow Brick Road in blues. I think I pretty much -have- to cut that one all out to start with. LOL.

Pretty cool blocks, it's really neat how they all come together and make an interesting block formation. It almost doesn't look like the blocks make that quilt. I had to look really closely...I like that kind of pattern!
I like doing it my way. As fiona states the is inspiration and creativity. The quilts I really don't like to make are the quilts that I follow the pattern to a tee. Keep us the good work, you have more fun when you color outside the lines.
I think it's going to look great. :) So do I actually see some of the same reds for your big squares? This one not a totally scrappy quilt?
It'll be nice to have those big wihte diamonds to do some quilt patterns in.

Original is where it's at, even if you start with an idea from a magazine. I am so glad to have moved on from that stage in my quilting. Thanks for the inspiration to do that.

Reading your comments about young quilters reminded me of a comment my cousin passed along. The reason for the great in our time of getting in touch with creativity, is that technology is moving so fast, one project where one will be in five years. By development of our own art, we create an identity for ourselves that provides continuity in a rapidly changing world. Here I am, and this is who I am right now.
If we didn't find a way to do it our way, everything would be the same. Witness all the Grandmother's Flower Gardens, Dresden Plates and Doulbe Wedding Rings of the 30's. That pretty much put an end to the big quilting resurgence of the time. That's part of why ours goes on . . . because we personalize.
But, I'm with Betsy, too. I would have eliminated the extra seams.
Obviously, I type faster than I proofread! Let me correct one sentence there, so it makes more sense:

How great to be free enough to change the pattern! You may inspire me to try that sometime.
I love your blocks--and I'm with you--the original pattern gets me started--but I follow my own path. And a lot of times, it's doing it easier than the pattern designer suggests. I'm all about shortcuts, but not compromising workmanship.
