Still hunting for stash fabrics that might work in my upcoming Civil War Diary quilt. Keeping a careful eye out for the quilt police, do you think I could use any of these three. I'm pretty comfortable with the one on the left and in the center, not so much with the one on the right side. Hoping for opinions from you gals....especially the ones that are doing the Civil War Diary Quilt. Thanks everyone..hope you keep cool this weekend!! *VBS* Posted by Picasa

Hi Finn, af the 3 the one on the right is questionable, but in a limited (small size pieces) capacity, it should work nicely.

meaning - it is not that far out of bounds!

Amy said exactly what I was trying to say but comments was NOT cooperating this morning. It strikes me as a little modern and funky...however:

If used in small areas and depending on what sort of blocks it's used in, it could definitely work. I'd keep it on the maybe pile.

Love the others!

I think the colour of the third one is great! Hard to tell what sixe the print is form the picture, but even if its a small print, for small pieces in a blcok I think it would be great.

The one on the right does seem brighter than the others. Maybe a quick tea bath to tone it down? I think the white is what's a bit bright, not the red.
Ha -- see, those "mediums" ARE tricky!!

I fell in love with Civil War repros a couple of years ago, but haven't acted on it, because I'm trying to finish other stuff first. Of course, I went overboard and now have too much. I know I'm not alone-just need to get the butt in gear and off the 'puter.

I just love those rusty reds! I also love the center fabric. I had some years ago when I first got into quilting, (about 1990?). Used it all up. I love bringing a "has been" back into service. Be sure to look for little checks and plaids for your blocks. Shirtings too. Great fun!

I agree with the others. First two would be perfect, last one in small amounts if you need it.

Oh the left and middle for sure! I think the right one would work if it is cut up small enough. Those blocks aren't that big are they? So if you use it cut up I think it could work.

Use the fabrics you like. You will spend a lot of time with a CWD quilt.
I have not done a CWD quilt, but I have done a full DJ and am currently working on a Nearly Insane quilt in red and white. I have tried 2 other colour combinations for my NI quilt and gave up on them very early.
The red and white is more fun, and that is what it is all about right, girls just wanting to have fun ? ;-)
See each block as it's own project and take it from there. If you are not happy you can make your blocks into tablerunners or whatever and start again ! Go for it Finn !

Morning Finn! Well, you've been given lots of opinions - I wonder what you've decided? I really like Jo Morton's answer to this type of question. When asked whether all the fabrics in her little quilt are appropriate to the time period this is what she says . . . "I don't worry so much if they are exactly appropriate to the time period. If something from the late 1800's looks good in a civil war quilt then I use it. What I'm going for is a certain 'feeling' - the feeling of an antique. When I put the fabrics together if I get that feeling then I use it - even if it's not exactly age appropriate." That's not a quote - I'm at work and they don't give me access to Yahoo Groups here so I can't look at her post to see her exact words - but that's the gist of it. If you like the one on the right and it looks good visually in the block then I say go for it!

Oh do I like the one on the right. Though it doesn't put me in mind of vintage fabric but more modern.
